Support Us

Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum has always brought a wide range of benefits to people visiting the museum – including out beyond the building – through its activities, projects and events. The current site however, is compromised by difficult access to its main collections, and by limited temporary exhibition, storage and other public spaces. The aim is to address these long-standing constraints through the redevelopment of the site – which will allow improved access to, and increased opportunities for the interpretation and use of the collections – a place where everyone is welcome.

An integral part of this planning process, has been the aspiration that the Art Gallery & Museum can become the central focus to a developing ‘cultural quarter’ within the town of Cheltenham – somewhere for local people and visitors to celebrate, explore and discover Cheltenham’s history, but also a place where you can experience a national / international touring show or see / buy work from local craftspeople and artists.

We need you to help us realise this vision.

There are many ways you can help Building for a New future , including making a donation or providing corporate support. Donations large and small will help fund work from gallery refurbishments to creating community exhibition spaces, and dedicated areas for young people to perform and exhibit / display their work.

Shout out to Young Composers & Lyricists

We want you to show off your musical talents for a brand new project delivered by The Cheltenham Trust, Gloucestershire Music and the Song Writing Charity. We want to hear your new melodies to be part of a special anniversary concert at The Cheltenham Town Hall on Thursday 25th October 2018. Your new writing could be developed into a professional song by a local composer to wow audiences next Autumn.

Artist Residency and commission: Disruptive intervention for The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum

We are pleased to offer one commission at £12,000. The commission is open to artists or groups of artists that have sufficient proven experience to manage the process of design, fabrication and installation of a work of public art. There is an extra fee of £500 available for residency expenses.

After 3 day residency for R&D at The Wilson and consultation with our audiences, the artist will create and deliver a ‘disruptive’ response to our collection.

What you create must be portable (tourable around the local area without specialist transport) and respond directly to our collection. It needs to primarily work outside of our building, with options to work in our education centre or main reception. The work should be visually intriguing and curious, so as to naturally attract attention in a school or high street. It needs to tell the stories of our collection in new and relevant ways. We are particularly interested in co or user curation and ‘new’ or ‘less heard’ voices. We are open to a variety of working styles including performance or visual art. There will be a launch event in Jan / Feb 2018 in which the artist will attend and present their work.

The artist might be based and working anywhere in the UK. We are keen to work with an artist/organisation who may not have created work with or for The Wilson before, to bring challenge and a fresh artistic perspective to the programme.

You can download the full brief here and we are seeking submissions by 9am October 24th 2017.
