Arrival of Spring

This exhibition of iconic contemporary objects connects fine craft to good design. Displayed in the splendid Arts and Crafts Collections room at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum each piece has been personally selected by SIT’s Creative Director Lizzi Walton and writer and stylist Charlotte Abrahams for the quality of the making and its ability to bring pleasure to our daily lives. Exhibits include work by Michael Eden, Ptolemy Mann, Pinch Design, Philippa Brock, Peter Layton, Cleo Mussi, Simon Pengelly and Ercol designs with Tamasyn Gambell are among the exhibitors.

Event Programme:

Stroud International Textiles will host a day of talks in which renowned makers, designers and commentators come together to discuss the connections between craft and design and the importance of aesthetic pleasure.

The Fiells
Charlotte and Peter Fiells – renowned design historians and writers. Their latest book ‘The Story of Design’ which charts the fascinating journey through the evolution of design through history to the present day. Chaired by Mary Greensted Glos Guild

From Studio to Shop Floor

Textile artist and designer Ptolemy Mann in conversation with Carmel Allen, Brand Champion of Heal's and journalist discuss the role commerce plays in fostering innovative craft and design practice. They will be joined by Clive Reeve, Managing Director for Oasis clothing. Peter Ting has just signed a licensing agreement with Oasis (the clothing brand) who will be using his Flutter ceramic design on a new range of clothing launching this summer. This is something of a first - a home ware designer influencing fashion rather than the other way around.

Radical Knit artist Freddie Robins and ceramic designer Peter Ting discuss their inspirations, the role of craft in the 21st century and whether innovation and creativity are essential to our lives and well being. Chaired by Charlotte Abrahams

The Curator and the Maker – an illustrated conversation about a symbiotic journeySpeakers: Mary La Trobe Bateman and artist Eleanor Glover

Mary La Trobe-Bateman, formerly Director of Contemporary Applied Arts and contemporary craft curator, describes how her career has evolved from designer to curator. Artist Eleanor Glover outlines how her varied career as an artist has been oxygenated by interaction with curators.There will be a short film by Eleanor as part of the talk.

Eleanor Glover is exhibiting in Selected at Newark Park as part of SIT’s Select Festival this year.
