the open west
is an exciting and brand new exhibition of nationally and internationally submitted contemporary and conceptual art.

Now in its seventh year, and its third year exhibiting at The Wilson, the open west is an annual open exhibition offering visitors the opportunity to view work by up to 45 artists working across painting, drawing and print, photography, film and sound, installation, performance, textiles, glass, metal, plastics, ceramics, video and sculpture.

Work chosen by the selection panel makes political and personal statements, asks questions, entertains, tells stories and introduces alternative interpretations. Each year there is a sense of discovery, of establishing relationships with new artists and the aim of curating a cohesive, exciting exhibition that engages a local and national audience. the open west’s strength lies in recognising the skills both of young emerging artists just starting to exhibit, as well as continuing to promote the careers of highly established artists. The exhibition is an unusual and successful format - it is a sensitively curated exhibition that enhances each individual selected work, as well as the space it is set in. Artists are encourage to be involved in the local community, either by creating new and site specific work responding to the location, or by taking part in the annual education programme and artists talks.

Artists' Talks

A very special day of talks, led by artists exhibiting in the exhibition will be held in May. This is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to come along and learn more about the themes represented in the exhibition and how different artists approach their work.
