competition conditions

Intention to build

It is intended that the winner of the competition will be appointed to develop the winning concept and take the design through to completion.

Competition Structure

Stage 1: The competition seeks concept designs – presented on a maximum of 2 A1 sheets – which will be judged anonymously. Proposals should focus on initial ideas and thinking. A shortlist of up to five will then be selected and the authors invited to proceed to the next stage.

Stage 2: Anonymity will be lifted at stage 2, when short-listed teams will be invited to elaborate on stage 1 ideas - in the context of a design solution. Final judging will involve an interview, at which teams will be asked to make a presentation of their proposals to the jury panel. Teams short-listed to this stage will be expected to demonstrate their ability to take the project forward, within budget and through to completion if chosen as the winner of the competition.

Eligibility

The competition is open internationally to architects and architect-led multi-disciplinary design teams. It should be noted that the competition promoters will be looking to select a team with the experience, capacity and resources to deliver the project and competitors should bear this in mind from the outset.

No member or employee of the promoting body or the jury panel shall be eligible to compete or assist a competitor.

Public Consultation

Prior to judging, all stage 1 submissions will be displayed within the Art Gallery & Museum - and also via the website under The Viewing Gallery – for public consultation. Comments raised through this exercise will be made available to the jury panel. This exhibition / showing will be held before short listing the stage 2 submissions.

Prize Money

An equal honorarium of £4,000 will be paid to each stage 2 finalist. The winner’s honorarium represents an advance on their professional fee.
