design considerations
Competitors should consider the following:
The relationship between associated architecture and the surrounding conservation area
Incorporating the 1989 extension within the new development:
- interchangeable and complementary functions – for example moving workshops / stores into the 1989 extension
- an entrance / opening / viewing point on each floor of the existing 1989 extension, through to the proposed new development
- retaining the architectural treatment of the façade on the 1989 building – as we are keen to show the different periods of architecture: 19th / 20th and now 21st century
Ensuring that the Art Gallery & Museum has a strong and visually distinct main entrance
Ensuring that the new extension redefines the street façade – by creating a ‘presence on the street’ – and complementing the scale of the neighbouring buildings (building to the same height as the 1989 extension)
The design and construction of the new development with good quality natural and reclaimed materials
The use of on-site / off-site sustainable energy sources and the relationship between controlled environments for the exhibition / display galleries, stores and open access stores, in complying with our aspirations for a low-energy building.
Budget
The estimated budget is £4m
A funding strategy for the scheme has been the object of an initial consultants report and continues to be developed. This includes a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
